The Times Higher Education Latin America University Rankings lists the top universities in the Latin America and Caribbean region.

It is based on the same 13 rigorous performance indicators that underpin the THE World University Rankings, but the weightings have been recalibrated to reflect the characteristics of Latin America’s universities. We judge universities across all of their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

The 2020 ranking includes 166 universities across 13 countries, up from 150 institutions across 12 nations last year.

The Pontifical Catholic University of Chile is number one for the second consecutive year, while Brazil’s universities of São Paulo and Campinas hold on to second and third place respectively.

Mexico achieves its highest ever ranking with Monterrey Institute of Technology claiming fourth place, up from fifth, but many of its other universities decline.

Meanwhile, Colombia drops out of the top 10 after the country’s top representative – University of the Andes, Colombia – falls two places to 11th.

Brazil is once again the most-represented nation in the table with 61 institutions, followed by Chile with 30 and Colombia with 23.

The top new entry in the table is Brazil’s Federal University of Uberlândia, which debuts at 55th place.

Elsewhere, Jamaica features in the top 20 for the first time as its sole representative, the University of the West Indies, rises 14 places to 18th.

Uruguay is the only new country to feature this year. ORT Uruguay University ranks in the 101-125 band.
