Liderazgo escolar: un nuevo libro de R. Marzano

Marzano.jpg Robert Marzano, autor de varias obras fundamentales en el campo de la educación, y quien anteriormente publicó un interesante estudio sobre escuelas efectivas (ver artículos relacionados más abajo), acaba de entregarnos un nuevo título junto con sus colaboradores T. Waters y B. McNaulty. En esta ocasión sobre el liderazgo en la escuela, tema al cual la investigación educacional está otorgando creciente importancia. El nuevo libro se titula: School Leadership That Works: From Research To Results.

En este nuevo estudio, Marzano y colaboradores buscan demostrar, con base en la evidencia empírica disponible, el significativo rol que el liderazgo escolar tiene en la efectividad de las escuelas. Entienden por efectividad escolar la capacidad de un establecimiento de obtener, con una misma población estudiantil, logros de aprendizajes claramente superiores a otras.
Pues bien. Empleando los resultados entregados por 35 años de investigación educacional sobre el tópico del liderazgo escolar, y luego de revisar con las técnicas del meta-análisis 69 estudios que comprendieron 2.802 escuelas, 1.4 millones de alumnos y 14 mil profesores), concluyen que en una escuela cuyo director pasara de tener habilidades de liderazgo promedio (se ubicara en el percentil 50) a mejorarlas para ubicarse en el percentil 60, los alumnos aumentarían en promedio en 10% su puntaje de logro. En un establecimiento cuyo director pasara a ubicarse en el percentil 99 en la escala de habilidades de liderazgo (o sea, se pusiera entre los líderes más destacados), los alumnos ganarían 22% puntos de logro en promedio.
Imaginemos lo que esto podría significar para Chile, si pensamos en los actuales puntajes SIMCE.
Más allá de entregarnos estas constataciones, el libro que comentamos aborda en su parte central las características y los comportamientos que definen la función del líder escolar.

Sobre los autores
Robert J. Marzano is a Senior Scholar at Mid-Continent Research for Education and Learning in Aurora, Colorado; an Associate Professor at Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Vice President of Pathfinder Education, Inc.; and President of Marzano & Associates consulting firm in Centennial, Colorado. He has developed programs and practices used in K–12 classrooms that translate current research and theory in cognition into instructional methods. An internationally known trainer and speaker, Marzano has authored more than 20 books and 150 articles and chapters on topics such as reading and writing instruction, thinking skills, school effectiveness, restructuring, assessment, cognition, and standards implementation. Recent ASCD titles include Building Background Knowledge for Academic Achievement (2004); Classroom Management That Works: Research Based Strategies for Every Teacher (Marzano, Marzano, & Pickering, 2003); What Works in Schools: Translating Research into Action (2003); A Handbook for Classroom Instruction That Works (Marzano, Paynter, Pickering, & Gaddy, 2001); and Classroom Instruction That Works: Research-Based Strategies for Increasing Student Achievement (Marzano, Pickering, & Pollack, 2001). Additionally, Marzano headed a team of authors who developed Dimensions of Learning (ASCD, 1992). Timothy Waters has served as CEO for Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL) since 1995; before that he worked for 23 years in public education, the last seven of which were as the superintendent of the Greeley, Colorado, school system. Waters serves on the Board of Directors of the National Education Knowledge Industry Association and is a past Commissioner of the Colorado Commission on Higher Education. Brian A. McNulty is Vice President of Field Services at McREL (Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning), responsible for coordinating McREL’s consulting, training, and technical assistance and developing new programs and services to implement McREL’s applied research and development. Prior to joining McREL, McNulty served as the Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services, Adams County School District 14, Commerce City, Colorado. He is a former Assistant Commissioner of Education at the Colorado Department of Education. McNulty has more than 30 years of experience in education; his areas of expertise include leadership development, school effectiveness and improvement, early childhood education, and special education.
