Research and Policy: Education research and researchers must be active partners in educational policymaking. In order for policymakers to take informed decisions on the objectives, delivery mechanisms and modalities of human capital formation, they need to have a better understanding of the options, costs and repercussions of policies. This is the task of the researchers in academic institutions, think tanks and development organizations. There is a need to strengthen national and international research capacity on, among others, metrics on quality and standards, impact evaluation, policy simulations and management information systems (MIS) and big data as well as to strengthen research-policy links. This theme will focus on the challenges of advancing this agenda nationally and internationally –

GDN’s 17th Global Development Conference, “Education for Development: Quality & Inclusion for changing Global Human Capital Needs” will be held on the 17th & 18th of March in Lima, Peru.

A few highlights
The conference registration will begin at 8.00 am on the first day.
The conference will open at 9.00 am.
In the opening ceremony, we will hear from:
Alan Winters, Unversity of Sussex & GDN Board, Miguel Jaramillo, Executive Director of GRADE, Pierre Jacquet, President of the Global Development Network, Elsa del Castillo, Rector of Universidad del Pacifico, Anwar Choudhury, British Ambassador to Peru and Jaime Saavedra, Minister of Education, Peru
There will be four plenaries over the two day session:
- Skills for Tomorrow, chaired by Indermit Gill from the World Bank & GDN Board
- Education Policy & Finance, chaired by Aberto Rodriguez, World Bank Director for Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela
- Enhancing Education Outcomes, chaired by Guillermo Perry, Universidad de los Andes & GDN Board
- Research & Policy, chaired by Miguel Jaramillo, GRADE
There will be 16 parallel sessions, on a variety of topics related to the above themes.
Topics include skills for life and work, enhancement of teachers’ status and education quality, using synthesized evidence to improve education policy and programming, evidence in education policy, achieving quality and inclusion in higher education, monitoring and evaluation for education policy, assessing inclusion in education and mechanisms to promote it, gender, education and the labor market, the role of community in education for development, risks and opportunities for Latin America’s Ninis, strong schools in Latin America and the Caribbean Region, as well as higher education and job training.
A big attraction is when finalists from the Japanese Awards will contest for two cash prizes. One prize is for outstanding research on development, and the other is for the most innovative development project. Each contest will occur in a distinct parallel session on Day 1. Prizes will be awarded at the closing plenary on Day 2, starting at 5 pm.
Two of GDN’s research projects feature prominently at the conference, with their own dedicated sessions:
- Doing Research: Assessing the Environment for Social Science Research in Developing countries
- Small is Beautiful? Piloting change in research capacity building in least developed countries
The closing keynote will be provided by Jamie Saavedra, Minister of Education, Peru
