COVID-19 and Education: The disruptive effect of the pandemic
on higher education

With remarks from Jose Joaquin Brunner (UDP-Chile), Juliana Londoño Velez (UCLA),
Miguel Urquiola (Columbia University) and moderated by Gregory Elacqua (IDB)
ABSTRACT:
Teaching and learning have been severely affected in recent months and higher education is no exception.

Before the pandemic, Latin America and the Caribbean had doubled its higher education enrollment in the last 15 years, but this increase brought with it two major and ongoing challenges: equity in access and quality.

What additional challenges did the pandemic create for higher education? What will be the impact of the economic crisis on higher education enrollment and graduation rates, especially for the most disadvantaged students? How has digitalization accelerated in higher education institutions since the COVID-19 pandemic began? How can blended learning be delivered efficiently in universities and technical-vocational institutions? Will the economic crisis lead to the development of new business models and cost structures?  How can higher education adapt to the new post-pandemic labor market?

We will discuss these questions with experts from Chile, UCLA and Columbia University.

SPEAKERS:
Jose Joaquin Brunner, Professor at Diego Portales University, Director of the UNESCO Chair on Comparative Policies in Higher Education, and former Minister of the State in Chile

Miguel Urquiola, Professor and Chair of the Department of Economics at Columbia University
